How and why to use Floralife Quickdip.

These are a few of the questions asked and helpful answers

1.
Q: What is the difference between Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydrating Treatment and Floralife® Hydraflor® 100 Hydration Postharvest Treatment?

A: Floralife® Quick Dip Hydrating Treatment is a ready-to-use solution. The stems are recut. The freshly cut stems are dipped into Floralife® Quick Dip Hydrating Treatment (1 – 2 inches, or 2 – 4 cm, in a plastic container is sufficient) and then placed into flower food.

Floralife® Hydraflor® 100 Hydrating Postharvest Treatment is a concentrate which requires dilution according to the label. The flowers stems are placed in a bucket of the solution for 1 – 2 hours at room temperature, or into a cooler for overnight (34° – 38° F). Then flowers transferred into the proper Floralife® Fresh Flower Food solution until time of shipment for optimal performance.

2.
Q: Can Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydrating Treatment be used on all types of flowers or just roses and Gerberas?

A: Floralife® Quick Dip Hydrating Treatment can be used on all types of flowers, even premade cash and carry bouquets.

3.
Q: What will happen if the flower stems are kept in the Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydrating Treatment Solution upon dipping for longer than a second or two?

A: Floralife® Quick Dip Hydrating Treatment Solution is an acidic product, thus leaving stem ends in the solution too long can lead to discoloration of tissue at this point.

4.
Q: Should I mix the product with water or before using? And if so, at what rate?

A: Floralife® Quick Dip Hydrating Treatment Solution is a ready-to-use product, therefore no dilution or mixing is required. Simply open the bottle and pour 2 inches worth of contents into a clean, shallow plastic or glass container (nonmetallic). The container should be wide enough to dip several stems at a time.

5.
Q: What is the purpose of using Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydrating Treatment?

A: A flower’s supportive plant tissue carries water and nutrients to the vital areas through a capillary system called “xylem.” These capillaries act much like straws which keep the flower stems, leaves, and petals supplied with ample fluids or moisture. This critical process to keeping flowers fresher is called hydration. There are two common reasons why the hydration process might be interrupted, severely affecting the freshness and longevity of a flower.

  • a. The flower capillaries can become blocked and plugged from air bubbles or dirt particles. When plugging occurs, water cannot flow easily up to the flower leaves and petals, which will cause them to quickly wilt. Bent neck in roses is a classic example of stem end plugging. This can slow or impede hydration which can result in the acceleration of flower death.
  • b. Capillaries can also be obstructive when a flower is placed in a stressed environment, such as heat or lack of available moisture, causing air blockage in the plant’s waterway. By using hydration treatments, these two postharvest issues can be greatly improved upon for greater flower freshness. The solution lowers water pH and keeps the flower stems free flowing for fullest hydration.

6.
Q: How long can I reuse the solution with dipping my flower stems before I need to replace it with new, fresh solution?

A: Once the solution gets contaminated you should use new solution from the original container. The solution shouldn’t be used for more them two days in total.

7.
Q: I’ve been told you can store already poured and used Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydrating Treatment Solution in a cooler for later use. Is this okay to do?

A: It is best to pour out only the amount you think you will need for your flowers each day. If you should have extra left over, it is best to store it in a cooler versus at room temperature. By doing so there will be less bacterial growth and the product will remain fresher. Solution to be reused shouldn’t be poured back into the original container, yet instead stored in the nonmetallic container used for dipping. It is best to store with a lid on the container to keep any microbial spores and debris out of the solution. Make sure you change out any used solution with new within 2 days time whether it is stored in a cooler or at room temperature.

8.
Q: If I use Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydratng Treatment Solution, can I do without using flower food?

A: The function of hydration solutions is to increase the ability for the flower stems to take up more liquids.

9.
Q: Why is it so important to hydrate flowers?

A: Use of a hydration solution is good for flowers, especially after a period of dry transport, for increased quality and enhanced flower life of fresh cut flowers. The solution improves the flow of liquids through the flower stems by clearing air and natural compounds blocking stem cell passageways. Some crop types that greatly benefit from its use are those that suffer from premature wilting and water stress problems, such as roses and Gerbera.

10.
Q: Is it really necessary to take the time to recut the stems prior to dipping into Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydrating Treatment, especially since I know my wholesale supplier already did it?

A: Yes. It is good practice to always recut every flower stem, taking off about 1 inch (3 cm) to remove any debris or callous which forms at the bottom of the stem. This opens up the stem to allow fluids to draw up the stem to the foliage and petals.

11.
Q: Can I simply add Floralife Quick Dip® Instant Hydrating Treatment to my flower food solution to save time?

A: No. Floralife® Quick Dip Hydrating Treatment is a hydration product intended to be a pretreatment for the flowers before flower food. Mixing the two products together throws the chemical formulation out of balance and could shorten vase life.
